Local events crowd September calendar

A pair of golf tournament are scheduled for Sept. 15 and 29.

The first is the sixth annual Rick Maggi Memorial, a four-person scramble at the Golf Club at Fernley, 50 Desert Lakes Drive, on Sept. 15. It is a shotgun start and begins at 8 a.m. and registration is open.

The cost is $25 for club members and $50 per nonmember and includes cart, green fee and lunch.

The proceeds will benefit Friends of XL Hospice. The tournament also features prizes including a two chances to putt for $100 with a $5 entry fee; a closest to the hole on five par 3's with a $5 entry fee; and an arm's length worth of raffle tickets for $20.

An auction will include other prizes and golf packages.

The second tournament is the 11th annual Mayor's Cup at the Golf Course at Fallon.

The tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Sept. 29.

Only 18 teams of four players can register. Individuals or businesses not fielding a team can sponsor a hole.

Prizes for the winning team, closest to the hole, a golf vacation for two and raffle prizes are up for grabs.

Cost for a team is $500 and individuals are $125 and hole sponsorships are $175.

Individuals or teams interested in playing for the Fallon Mayor's Cup can contact Rick Gray or Candy Dolan at 775-423-4556. Make checks payable to Mayor's Youth Fund.

New Frontier and the Churchill Community Coalition will celebrate members of the community who are recovering from addictions with a 5K Walk/Run though Fallon on Sept. 15.

The race begins 9 a.m. and registration opens at 8 a.m. at Pioneer Park on North Maine Street.

It is an open course, traffic personnel will only be stationed at major intersections.

All participants are required to follow normal pedestrian laws, such as running against traffic, watching for on coming vehicles at intersections and so forth.

Everyone who finishes will receive a participation medal.

After the event, activities at Pioneer Park begin with a fun-filled day including a barbeque picnic. Cost of the race is $15 per person and a family of three is $25. For a guaranteed T-shirt, register today.
