Parks & Recreation September classes

Beginning Irish dance

Ages 5-17 can learn the basic techniques and steps of traditional Irish dance and have the opportunity to participate in the local events. Class held 6:15-7:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 9-30 at the Dance Workshop. Cost is $55.

Introduction to the violin

Students in grades 3-6 can learn to play the violin including proper way to hold the instrument and how to play simple melodies. All materials and the use of a violin are included. Class will be 3:30-4:15 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept.17-Oct. 8 at Piñon Hills Elementary School. Cost is $25.


Students ages 8-13 can learn safe archery practice with certified instructors. All equipment will be provided. Class will be 3:30-4:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 29-Oct. 20 at Meneley Elementary School. Cost is $40, plus a $5 equipment fee payable to the instructor.

Beginner’s Tai Chi

Learn this soft martial arts form that will include warm ups, exercises and repetitions. Class will be Saturdays at Lampe Park and is on going. Cost is $5 per month.

30-hour drivers education classroom course

This 30-hour class satisfies the requirement for a Nevada Drivers License. After completing the class the student will receive a certification of completion. Class will be 8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturdays, September 9-27 at the recreation annex. Cost is $70.


These yoga classes are accessible to beginners while providing a challenge for all students. Class is held 10-11 a.m. Fridays, Sept. 5-26, or Sundays, Sept. 7-28 at the recreation annex. Cost is $20 per session.

Ballroom dancing

This is a chance to learn and practice the fundamental of many popular dances. Class will be 7:45-8:45 p.m. Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 26. Cost is $80 per couple.

The wonders of watercolor and more

Students will create their own creations, and need to bring their own supplies. A list is available at time of registration. Class held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 8-Oct. 13 at the recreation annex building. Cost is $79.

Dog obedience

Learn to establish good conduct and curb bad habits and help you teach basic commands. Class held 7-8 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 1-Nov. 5 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Building. Cost is $80.

Concealed Weapon Certification

This course will cover the requirements for Nevada State CCW and can be taken by CCW applicants or anyone wanting to learn to shoot handguns. Class will be 6-9:30 p.m. Sept. 17 and 19 at the Recreation Annex building, and 8-11 a.m. Sept. 20 at Douglas County Shooting Range. Cost is $90, plus an additional $10 insurance fee payable to the instructor. Spouses are ½ price.
