New exhibits showcase high school talent

The Carson Valley Arts Council is exhibiting a number of original works by Douglas High School art and photography students March 7-27.

The exhibit will be available for viewing 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the Copeland Art Gallery, 1572 Highway 395, Minden.

Some select pieces will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds going to support the arts council.

The public is encouraged to attend a reception in the gallery 3:30-5:30 p.m. March 7. Light refreshments will be served. The reception, hosted by the Carson Valley Arts Council, is free and open to everyone.

DHS art and photography instructor, KC Brennan, has been a teacher of the arts and photography for 32 years, 17 of which in Douglas County and the past six years at DHS.

She explained that art, especially photography is “in my blood, and my husbands as well.”

Artwork being displayed includes paintings, drawings, ceramics, silk screening and photography.

Third-year photography student Amber Johnson started taking photos at age 4 using her “Barbie” camera. The love for photography just kept growing from there. .

Alexander Ghan stated that he strongly believes the key to enjoying life is trying new things. Just taking up photography classes himself, he’s not sure where it will lead but is sure it will at least remain a life-long hobby for him.

Amber Allen started taking pictures of her baby cousin at the age of 13. She said she has loved photography ever since.

“CVAC looks forward to sponsoring this unique display and we are hoping the public will take advantage of viewing the talents of these young adults,” organizers said.

GadZooks art and gifts is also showing an exhibit of high school students’ work. An opening reception is 2 p.m. March 8 with music by McCann Patterson and others.

GadZooks is located at 1411 Highway 395, Gardnerville. The show will be up one month. For more information, call 782-9665.
