She dedicated the swim to her father, Robert, who is serving overseas in Afghanistan. It marked Douglas’ first swimming state title in any event since 2010 and the first in an individual event since 2009 (Haley VonSchottenstein, 100 breaststroke). Sports fodder for a Friday morning . . . On the surface, Chris Ault joining the Kansas City Chiefs as a consultant makes absolutely no sense. Why would Ault go to a team that has an offensive-minded head coach (Andy Reid) and with a quarterback (Alex Smith) that will never line up in more than a dozen or so pistol formations in a game? The Chiefs’ offensive coordinator (Doug Pederson) and quarterback coach (Matt Nagy) are Reid disciples from the Philadelphia Eagles. And the Eagles have also hired another offensive consultant (Brad Childress) to watch over Reid’s precious spread offense. …

Minden resident Mike LaBarge, 38, isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. Fighting in a war and surviving cancer would tend to do that to you. He’s spent most of his adult life working as a bomb disposal technician or training bomb disposal technicians in the Marine Corps. At one point, after a grade 4 cancerous tumor was discovered wedged between his skull and his brain, he received a life-expectancy prognosis of as little as two weeks. That was 10 years ago. Earlier this month, LaBarge commemorated suriving that 10 years by undertaking his latest challenge — swimming for …

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Wednesday $14 million in fourth quarter and increased production bonus payments to 162 producers to support the production and expansion of advanced biofuels from a variety of non-food sources, including waste products. East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts will observe Emergency Medical Services Week today through Saturday. This year’s national message is: “One Mission – One Team.” The fire stations in Topaz Ranch Estates, the Gardnerville Ranchos, Minden, and Sunridge will be open to the public during business hours to meet firefighter-paramedics and tour stations. The EMS delivery system in East Fork is unique, but not uncommon to rural areas starting with the information received by a 911 dispatcher, and life saving instructions they can provide, to the response component of our combination system of neighborhood first responder volunteers assisting the firefighter/paramedics. …

It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. Prior to the beginning of the season, Douglas High swim coach Sarah Davenport surveyed the landscape of competition throughout the region and just couldn’t see a way around the Galena Grizzlies girls team. Everything — the 45-meet duals win streak, the race for a seventh-consecutive league title and the defense of a regional title — seemed like it would be in jeopardy. “Galena just had such strong swimmers,” Davenport said. “I didn’t we’d be able to beat them.” As it turns out, Davenport’s program is even stronger than she thought. Thanks to a number of standout individual performances the Douglas High School girls track and field team took a strong third place at the Northern Division Regional Championships at Damonte Ranch Saturday. Douglas scored 88.50 points as a team, behind McQueen (111) and Damonte Ranch (109). Reno and Carson rounded out the girls top five. The Douglas boys took seventh, with McQueen also winning the boys team title. Douglas’ Lindsey Adams highlighted the day, winning the girls 800 (2:20.81) and the 1,600 (5:16.65). There it was. A regional championship, six outs away and ripe for the picking. It never got any closer for the Douglas softball team, though, Saturday afternoon in the regional finals against Reed at Bishop Manogue. The Lady Tigers saw a 2-0 lead evaporate in a seven-run sixth inning that ranged from devastating to surreal as Reed kept its season alive with a 9-5 win. The Raiders then grabbed another 9-5 win in Game 2 to claim the Northern Division Regional Championship, abruptly ending Douglas’ season after a dream run through the playoffs. Douglas’ Kali Sargent was locked in a …

Douglas senior infielder Katie Kluever has been a spark plug atop the Tiger softball team’s lineup all season. Matter of fact, base hits and wreaking havoc on the base paths have pretty much defined her varsity career at Douglas. So as she stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded trailing 4-3 in the regional semifinal game Thursday afternoon, a nice line drive base hit was all she was looking for. She got so much more. Kluever smacked a grand slam home run — the first of her varsity career — against Damonte standout Kalynn Paque, providing …

The game didn’t have an optimal start and the scoring came in unconventional ways, but the Douglas High School softball team took care of the most important statistic — the win column — in the first round of the regional playoffs Tuesday afternoon. Once there, Douglas cruised past Galena 9-1 to advance to Thursday’s regional semifinal against defending regional champion Damonte Ranch. That game occurred after The R-C’s press deadline. The bill’s primary goal is to prevent mentally ill people from getting guns, Jones said previously. Under the amendment, all private sales would go through federal firearms dealers directly to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System — bypassing the state background system and associated costs. “The idea here is to move forward …

NDOT Director Rudy Malfabon said the fatality messages will be followed by safety messages reminding drivers to buckle up, as well as other reminders. “These are so much more than numbers,” he said. “They are a wife, a father, a brother, a friend or neighbor, and there’s no better reason or stronger reminder for us all to buckle …

Sports fodder for a Friday morning . . . The Nevada Wolf Pack’s 2010 miracle football season just keeps getting better and better. In fact, it doesn’t seem like such a miracle anymore. The 2010 team can now boast nine players that have been drafted by the NFL. Safety Duke Williams (fourth round by the Buffalo Bills) and cornerback Khalid Wooten (sixth round, Tennessee Titans) were picked in last week’s NFL draft. Despite not-so-quiet whispers to the contrary lately, it seems like the old Wolf Pack head coach could recruit after all. Offensive lineman Joel Bitonio, a senior this fall, …
