SAN FRANCISCO - Greenwave choir director Kathy Archey spun around to face her 60-person ensemble, while, at the same time, listening to the public address announcer introduce the national anthem being sung by her group.

Archey raised both hands, pauseed for a few seconds and then proceeded to lead the choir through a stirring rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" in front of 30,000 fans at AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team.

While the choir belted out the national anthem, the Navy Junior ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) color guard stood motionless in front of the choir, wind whipping the American flag's stripes in a more prominent display.

"The color guard was very professional and crisp," said Terri Pearson, a secretary and chaperone at the high school. "When the wind picked up the flag, it gave me goosebumps."

Pearson and others in the ball park had a right to be proud of the Churchill County Choir, jazz band and color guard. For the sixth consecutive year, the choir has annually sung the national anthem prior to a Giants game, and for the past three years, the Giants have designated a specific game as Churchill County High School Day.

Archey said the musicians and JROTC did not disappoint the crowd.

"The color guard was beautiful. I watched them practice the other day, and the band was great," she said.

Archey's attention then turned to her singers.

"This is the best anthem we have done," Archey said. "They were wonderful. It was also neat to have WNC choir members here."

In addition to 55 high school students belting out the anthem, Archey also had five of her WNC choir students join the group to participate in the day's activities.

Lucas Koening, jazz band director, brought 12 musicians to San Francisco, and they performed at Willie Mays Plaza an hour before the game.

"It was great, Many people stopped and listened," he said. "They gave a good performance and had a lot of energy."

Once inside the ballpark, the jazz band performed two more songs, "How High the Moon" and "Band Stand Boogie."

"I thought it was awesome," said alto saxophonist Allison Woolsey. "I have never experienced anything like that."

The Fallon freshman said it didn't bother her to play in front of thousands of people.

Seniors Geoff Hardie and Emil Alipio praised their fellow musicians.

"There's nothing better than having thousands of people watch us," said Hardie, who performed at AT&T Park for a third time.

Alipio, student choir president, said the performances were well received.

Saturday also marked Alipio's third year of coming to AT&T Park.

"This was just as good as the previous two times, but it seems to get better every year," he said.

Archey said the Giants organization worked with her group very well.

"The Giants are so nice to us," she added.

Archey said she is already talking to the Giants organization about next year's Churchill County High School Day.
