Weather to delay Western Nevada College series

The return of winter weather has caused scheduling changes for the Western Nevada College-Colorado Northwestern Community College baseball series later this week.

The four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference series was set to begin on Friday at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City, but has been moved back to Saturday, with the final two games set for Sunday. Doubleheaders begin at noon, with the second game each day tentatively set for 2 p.m.

Snow fell on campus Wednesday, and the forecast calls for a chance of snow through Friday.

WNC, which is 14-10 overall and 2-6 in the SWAC, defeated the Spartans 1-0 in its conference opener on February 22 in Henderson. In that game, Wildcat freshman pitcher Christian Stolo threw a no-hitter.

The Wildcats have struggled in close games since then, losing three conference games by one run and another by two runs. As a result, the Wildcats are hoping to take advantage of their home-field edge against the Spartans (1-7).

"Every game and every series is incredibly important to us," said WNC Coach D.J. Whittemore. "When you wait a week to redeem yourself, it can feel like forever. But our guys know how to work and prepare, and we will be ready to go whenever the first pitch is thrown."

Saturday's doubleheader also is the first of two Stack the Stands events for WNC's athletic teams. Spectators will be treated to free peanuts and popcorn and have an opportunity to win raffle prizes. WNC students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with a valid WNC ID.

In addition, the first 25 people through the gate will receive a free Wildcats T-shirt.

Admission prices are $6 for adults, and $3 for seniors and youth under 18.

A second Stack the Stands event is planned for Saturday, March 16, when the WNC softball team plays host to rival College of Southern Nevada at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City. That doubleheader also begins at noon.
