The great questions in history people have always wondered about are, the meaning of life, how to make the best of it, is there life after death, and does a supreme being lie behind this visible universe? Various religions or faiths have tried to answer these questions. Everyone lives out their lives according to beliefs they hold even when not directly related to religious systems. Our hopes and dreams for the future are based on believing there will be a future. Atheism aggressively expresses opposition to all religious belief. Ironically, it too is religious belief only in the opposite direction. There is no certainty in either direction. However, the Bible speaks directly against negative belief in Psalms 14:1, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” God’s estimate of the man who does not believe in Him is that he is a fool.In the past God often spoke to man through His prophets. Here are the words He spoke through the prophet Isaiah; “For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me (Isaiah 46:9). These words clearly refutes the erroneous conception that all religions are equally true and that they all proclaim the same God. Statistics tell us that Christianity is the world’s largest religion. However, in his own words we learn that it was never Jesus’ intention to establish a religion. Instead, he said he came to fulfill the promises that God had given previously in the ancient religion of the Jews revealed through Moses and the prophets. In Matthew 5:17, Jesus called His message, “The Gospel.” His followers call it, “The Gospel of Jesus Christ.” The term has a pleasing sound in itself, but it is from the meaning of the individual words that it derives its happy significance. “Gospel” means good news. Good news is rare in today’s modern world. Good news is like a refreshing rain after a very long season of dust and drought. Moreover, the Gospel is striking in simplicity, A verse in John 3;16 has long been recognized as the Gospel compressed in one short sentence. It simply tells us that God loves the world (each one of us) so much so that He sent His only begotten Son into the world to redeem us by his own death. The name “Jesus” means, “Savior.” “Christ” is a translation of the Greek word “Christos” which, in turn, is a translation of a Hebrew word meaning, anointed one or Messiah. This well-known term in the Jewish religion refers to the promised Eternal King and the Prince of Peace prophesied over and over again by Old Testament prophets. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is Gods’ gracious remedy for human despair and brokenness It is the incredible hope of millions who would otherwise live in intolerable fear, anxiety, discouragement and depression. It will do the same for all who chose to believe its message. Pastor Gene Holman of Living Word Fellowship inGardnerville is a member of Carson Valley Ministers’ Association.
