Students show off science skills

Jacks Valley Elementary School was transformed into a veritable laboratory on Monday as students exhibited 171 projects for their annual science fair.

"The JVES science fair committee was excited to see a variety of projects submitted by our students," said ESL teacher and science fair committee member Andrew Fromdahl. "Some of the projects are related to topics covered at school like weather, and others are generated from student curiosity such as moldy food or impact of different liquids on materials."

Of the total number of projects, 162 came from fourth-, fifth and sixth graders. There were three class projects and six entries from second- and third-graders.

The projects were judged by 23 volunteers from various groups in the community, including the school district, Minden-Tahoe Airport, Western Nevada College, Diablo Industries Thin Film, GE Energy, and others. Judges used the school's iPads to submits score sheets electronically.

"We hosted family night Monday evening and had an estimated 300 parents, students, and family members attend," said Fromdahl.

Upper grade participants earned a Block E credit, which is the school's academic and citizenship award program. Fifth- and sixth-graders also submitted their projects for science class requirements.

La Hacienda del Sazon of Minden provided a luncheon for school staff and judges.
