Arts council hosts mandala display

The Carson Valley Arts Council will host an art exhibit featuring mandalas painted in acrylic by Kaleigh Surber starting Tuesday through May 1.

The opening reception is 5-7 p.m. March 8 in the Copeland Cultural Arts Center located at 1572 Highway 395 in Minden. The reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshment available; wine available for a donation.

Surber said her exhibit presents a synthesis of this ancient universal art form with a contemporary aesthetic.

The artworks are created in acrylic on canvas.

"To fully experience the art, the viewer need only gaze into the mandalas to access a safe place of beauty, balance, and harmony - a refuge from the chaos and stress of modern life," Surber said.

Surber was born and raised in Nevada where she has returned to live after many years in the Sierra foothills of California. She is an artist, teacher, personal counselor, lifelong meditator, and spiritual seeker.

As an artist, she works primarily in watercolor, pastel, ink, and acrylic. Painting subjects include landscape, still life, botanical, and abstract.

In addition to fine art paintings, Surber has illustrated more than 25 books for children and adults, and creates advertising illustrations and graphic designs.

Her work has been exhibited in various venues, several being the Canessa Park Gallery in San Francisco, Gallery II on Main in Grass Valley, and the Broad Street Gallery in Nevada City.

She was the featured artist at the Candy Dance in Genoa in September 2005. Her work currently appears in the First Floor Gallery at the St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City, Artsy Fartsy Gallery in Carson City, and the Nevada Historical Society Museum in Reno as part of the permanent collection. Her work is also part of many personal collections.

The Carson Valley Arts Council gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
