Man shot in Mono parking lot believed to be attempted suicide

A man found in the parking lot of the Mono Basin Visitor's Center with a gunshot wound to the chest on this morning appears to have attempted to take his own life, authorities said.

Mono County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Mono Lake visitor's center located north of Lee Vining at 8 a.m. after receiving a report of an unresponsive man. The center is closed for the winter.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jennifer Hansen said deputies, Mono County paramedics and Lee Vining firefighters arrived to find the man still alive with a single gunshot wound.

The man was taken by ambulance to the medical clinic in Bridgeport and then helicoptered by Careflight to Renown Medical Center in Reno for treatment.

Hansen said the incident is under investigation.
