Flu season has come to Antelope Valley

It took a bit of time to come across to us from the East Coast, but the flu has arrived. I receive information regularly from the Mono County Public Health Officer, and the latest bulletin says that it is becoming widespread in our area. His first advice is to get a flu shot. Next is to wash your hands frequently. If you do get the flu, stay home, rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Since this year sounds like one of the worst for the flu bug in a long time, please be careful for yourself and those around you.

Fishing season

It hasn't been a booming start for the season at Topaz Lake, with the snowfall and freezing temperatures we've had. It was so strange to see the lake surface frozen and nobody able to fish for many days. There were a lot of disappointed anglers who were looking forward to the season. We'll hope that doesn't repeat itself and that fisherman can finally get out and enjoy catching the tagged fish in the lake.

Women's Club

The Antelope Valley Women's Club is holding an open house on Feb. 21, 1 p.m., at the Community Building in Walker. They want to invite you to get involved with the community through the valley's oldest service organization. They would love to hear new ideas to help support student scholarships and other community activities.

VFW pancake breakfasts

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3630 is holding pancake breakfasts on the fourth Saturday of every month at the Park Building in Topaz Ranch Estates. They are serving eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, juice, and coffee. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. It sounds like a great way to get all the goodies for your morning, and at such a good price.

Walmart opening

Like most in our valley, I am glad that there is now a Walmart closer to us than in Carson City, but I'd like to remind everyone that we can shop Walmart and our local merchants who have been there for us all along.
