Donated equipment helped defuse Monday standoff

Technology paid for by private donations contributed to the safe conclusion of a standoff on Monday evening.

When a Johnson Lane woman with a gun threatened to commit suicide and barricaded herself into the garage on Monday afternoon, authorities cordoned off the neighborhood in preparation for the worst.

But in addition to armed officers, Douglas County also mobilized the Crisis Negotiation Team to try and talk her into giving up.

Using a throw phone, negotiators were able to communicate with her and eventually get her to surrender peacefully.
