It’s hard to believe that 10 years and five months after Douglas County’s first Walmart arrived, a second will be opening its doors today. It wasn’t long after the first Walmart opened that rumors surfaced the company was looking for a location south of Gardnerville. In March 2005, the question was whether the superstore would end up on Peri & Sons land located at Pine Nut Road. We can guarantee the rumors had been flying before that. The following year, the rumored Walmart location had moved north to Washoe tribal land. Where Walmart might be generated more stories about what wasn’t happening than any other single issue in The Record-Courier since speculation that the V&T was headed through town to Bodie.Unlike the fabled shortline, though, Walmart had every intention of finding a spot along Highway 395. Store representatives talked to both Peri and the Tribe in the an effort to find a location. That location in the Virginia Ranch subdivision was rezoned by Douglas County commissioners in 2004. At the time, the project was envisioned for mostly houses with a 22-acre commercial site with a “Main Street” theme, the R-C reported. As it turns out, Walmarts will be on our Main Street in Douglas County for the foreseeable future.
