A man in an orange jumpsuit claiming to be looking for a gas leak found himself being shot at after an early morning encounter with a Clear Creek resident.
Carson City and Douglas County deputies spent Tuesday morning searching for the man and another after the stolen black Jeep they were driving was wrecked during their escape.
According to the Carson City Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred at about 4 a.m. between Carson City and Spooner Summit.
The resident said he was awakened by a noise on his rear deck and confronted by a 6-foot-tall white man wearing an orange jumpsuit and identifying himself as a gas utility worker.
According to the sheriff's office, the resident was suspicious because that part of Clear Creek isn't served by natural gas. The resident armed himself and went to the front door, where the man was sitting in a vehicle parked in front of his home.
The two spoke before the man jumped back into the black Jeep and tried to drive away. The Jeep left the roadway and crashed onto a neighbor's property, as the resident fired his weapon.
No one was injured in either the shooting or the accident.
Carson City deputies responding to the incident found tracks from two suspects at the scene heading south into the mountains south of Clear Creek toward Douglas County.
Both Carson and Douglas deputies searched the area from Highway 395 to Alpine View, including around Jacks Valley Elementary School, assisted by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office RAVEN helicopter.
