Public invited to Walmart opening Wednesday

Walmart is inviting Carson Valley residents to the grand opening of its new store 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at 1511 Grant Ave. in Gardnerville. The store will open to the public immediately following the ceremony. According to a company press release, the new store has added approximately 250 new jobs to the area. It will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.“With Walmart as an anchor store and the infrastructure that has been provided, the center is an attractive location for new businesses,” Gardnerville Town Manager Tom Dallaire said of the Marketplace at Virginia Ranch. “The Town of Gardnerville appreciates this significant investment that has been made in our community. With the construction of the store, previously planned arterial roads, local roads and a regional storm water detention facility were constructed. Town and county staff had a lot of input on the design of the regional detention pond so it can be used as a park for the employees of the new center, and residents and visitors to the Carson Valley.”Community and business leaders will join Walmart associates for a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Douglas High School band will perform, and the Explorer Honor Guard will present the colors.“We are excited to open,” said store manager Erik Schumann. “We are committed to providing our customers with everyday low prices. We look forward to serving the people of our community, helping save them money so they can live better.”The store offers a combination of general merchandise and a full line of groceries, including family apparel, health and beauty aids, electronics, toys, lawn and garden items, jewelry, automotive products, home furnishings, hardware, sporting goods, and pet supplies. The grocery area will include a variety of fresh produce, including organic products, a full bakery, deli, meat and dairy products, beverages, frozen foods, canned and packaged goods, baking items and household supplies. There will also be a Tire & Lube Express, Regal Nails, Subway, Smart Styles hair salon, digital photo processing center, pharmacy, and “The Clinic at Walmart” operated by the Carson-Tahoe Hospital.“The pharmacy will offer a full range of products and services to support the health and wellness of customers and their families,” said the company. “The pharmacy team can answer questions and offer health and wellness solutions. They can also assist customers who wish to transfer their prescriptions to Walmart. The pharmacy is conveniently located at the front of the store next to the services department.”The store features many energy-saving elements as part of the company's overall efforts to reduce energy consumption, including LED lights in signage, freezer cases and the parking lot, which utilize about 50 percent less energy than traditional lighting.Nonprofit organizations will also benefit from the retailer's ongoing charitable contributions and support for community projects. As part of Walmart's commitment to the communities in which it operates, $8,000 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation will be presented to local organizations at the grand opening.According to the company, the average wage at Walmart for full-time hourly associates in Nevada is approximately $13.31 per hour, and nearly 75 percent of the company's managers began their careers as hourly associates.“Each week, more than 200 million customers and members visit our 10,400 stores under 69 banners in 27 countries and e-commerce websites in 10 countries,” the company said. “With fiscal year 2012 sales of approximately $444 billion, Walmart employs more than 2.2 million associates worldwide.”For more information, visit Online merchandise sales are available at and
