Fishing: Open season at Topaz Lake

The fishing season started in earnest New Year's Day at Topaz Lake, with an estimated 1,000 anglers flocking to the shores to test the waters.

Opening day also marked the start of the annual Topaz Lodge fishing derby.

All Topaz Lodge tagged trout pay out $100, 10 derby tickets and $10 of slot play.

All untagged trout weighing two pounds or more carry $5 in slot play and 10 derby tickets.

The two biggest trout brought to the Topaz Lake General Store every week will carry cash prizes as well. The biggest fish wins $50 and the second-best takes $25.

Anglers can participate in the derby through April 14, when the lodge will give away various fishing gear and $1,000 in cash.

Participants must be 21 or older.

To make reservations, or for more information on the derby, call the Topaz Lodge and Casino at 266-3338 or 800-266-3338.
