The Tahoe-Douglas Elks Lodge is sponsoring its annual Hoop Shoot National Basketball Free Throw Contest on Tuesday at Meneley Elementary School at 3:30 p.m.
The contest is open to all Douglas County residents ages 8 to 13.
Each contestant will have 25 free throw attempts. Contestants must wear tennis shoes and use the provided basketballs. No registration is required for the local contest.
Local winners will compete in the district finals in Carson City on Jan. 26 with the state finals taking place in Hawthorne on Feb. 2.
The names of the national winners will be inscribed on the Elks National Hoop Shoot plaque on permanent display in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Silver Strike Lanes in the Gardnerville Ranchos is forming a pair of bowling leagues for the coming month.
The first is "Battle of the Businesses," which will be Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. starting Jan. 8 and running four weeks.
There will be four different games (Scotch doubles, 9 pin, 3-6-9 and standard) played each night of the league. First place prize money and the business name on a trophy displayed at the bowling alley will go to the winner.
Each participant gets ad time on the monitors throughout the bowling center and businesses can give away raffle prizes. Cost is $25 per team, per week.

A second league will be "Beat Your Own Average" where participants compete against themselves week to week.
The league starts Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. and runs for 15 weeks.
Cost is $15 per week for 10 weeks. The last five weeks, no linage will be due. $3.75 per oerson, per week will go back into the prize fund. Each bowler receives one point for bowling their current average, plus one point for every 10 pins over their average and minus one point for every 10 pins under the average.

Sign-ups for the fourth-annual Carson Valley Hot shots girls softball skills clinics are being accepted.
The clinics are set for Jan. 6, Jan. 13, Jan. 20, Jan. 27 and are open to softball players ages 7-14.
The sessions for 7-8-year-olds run from 1-3 p.m.; 9-10-year-olds run from 3-5 p.m. and 11-14-year-olds from from 5-7 p.m. All sessions are conducted at Line Drive U at 2577 Nowlin Road in Minden off of Johnson Lane.
Cost is $40.

The Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for the Adult Flag Football League.
Early registration ends Jan. 11 and costs $465 per team. After that, the cost raises to $490 per team.
Sign-ups close Jan. 18.
Cost includes 10 regular season games and a postseason single-elimination tournament. All games are at Lame Park on Sundays.
The season begins Jan. 27.
