n Hoop Shoot
The Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge sponsor the annual Elks "Hoop Shoot" basketball free throw contest on Tuesday, January 8 starting at 3:30 p.m. at Meneley Elementary School. The competition is open to all girls and boys living in Douglas County.
Nearly three million children participate annually in this national event. The contest is free and open to youngsters ages 8-13. Competition is broken down into three age categories (8-9, 10-11, 12-13) for both boys and girls. Each contestant has 25 free throw shots at the hoop; all participants must wear tennis shoes and use provided basketballs.
Local winners will compete in Carson City for the Northern Nevada district titles soon after the January 8 contest. District winners travel to Hawthorne on February 2 for the Nevada State titles. Those winners compete in the West Coast Regionals on February 23 in Las Vegas, and the National Finals take place in Springfield, Massachusetts on April 20. National winners receive a trophy and get their name inscribed at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield. Travel expenses for the winners from the Northern Nevada District and their parents are paid for by the Elks.
Meneley Elementary School is located at 1446 Muir Drive in the Gardnerville Ranchos. For more information about the Hoop Shoot, call Gary at 265-6136.
