Mary Elizabeth Haight (”Betty”), 92, longtime resident of Gardnerville, Nev., passed away peacefully on Dec. 12, 2012 with her companion Don Carlyle at her side. She leaves a son, Randy Haight, of Concord, Calif.; daughter, Suzanne Pittson; son-in-law, Jeff Pittson and grandson, Evan Pittson of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.Born Mary Elizabeth Wilson on Aug. 24, 1920 in Stettler, Alberta, Canada, she moved to Oakland, Calif. in 1924, graduating from Oakland Technical High School in 1937. She began work as a bookbinder where she met her husband, Ron Haight, to whom she was married from 1942 until his death in 1998, living from 1956-1979 in the Montclair District of Oakland. During the early ‘50s, Betty also demonstrated her vocal talent by recording a 78 disc of jazz standards with well-known Bay Area musicians. During the ‘60s & ‘70s, she worked as a teacher’s aid in the Oakland Public Schools, then moved to Gardnerville in 1979. During her time in the Carson Valley, Betty was active with “For the Love of Jazz,” and regularly attended their jazz concerts. Since 1983, Betty was a devoted practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism, and as a member of the SGI-USA peace organization, strove for self-improvement, inner joy and the encouragement of others. Betty worked in the Children’s Center at the Carson Valley Inn from the ‘90s until she retired in 2006, at the age of 86. Betty’s youthful spirit remains an inspiration to all of us: from this moment and beyond.
