Forestdale Road closed to all motor vehicles on Friday, including snowmobiles.
Forestdale Road is typically opened to over-snow vehicles in the early winter and late spring when insufficient snow exists at the Hope Valley Snopark.
Hope Valley Snopark has had adequate snow accumulations in the last few weeks, making staging available to snowmobiles.
The timing of the closure of Forestdale Road is determined on an annual basis by the Carson District Ranger based on a review of on-the-ground conditions.
The Mokelumne Wilderness area is adjacent to Forestdale Road on the west and is always closed to motor vehicles. Snowmobile riders should be aware of all closed areas and ride only in areas with sufficient snow.
Forest Service officials said having the proper snow gear and letting someone know where you intend to go are good ways to stay safe in the backcountry.
Snowmobilers must also carry a California Snopark pass and have a valid state registration on the machine.
