On Jan. 4 and 5, the Douglas High School Speech and Debate Team will be hosting their annual Sagebrush League Tournament. More than 200 students from 18 high schools in Northern Nevada will compete in both speaking and debating events over the two days.
The team is looking for volunteer judges.
"We are reliant upon your help to make this event a success," team coach Paul Mileo said in an email. "We are asking you to consider volunteering some of your time and energy to support this activity. Many people think that they are not qualified to judge at high school speech and debate tournaments; however, the students are all learning to communicate to the public. This is why we look for people who would make up one of our nation's average juries."
The judging schedule has been divided into different blocks of time, and those interested need to indicate when they can volunteer.
"We will provide snacks and beverages, as well as lunch and dinner, for those who are able to help us judge the tournament," said Mileo.
There will be two judging clinics at Douglas High School on Thursday, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The clinics will be held in room 607, located in the portables on the north side of campus, west of the soccer field.
Attendance is not required to judge, but many have found it a helpful orientation to the activity, Mileo said.
"Thank you for supporting our students' academic pursuits at Douglas High School," he said.
