When Aspen Park resident Dorothy Davidson opened her door Thursday, she was pleasantly surprised to see 16-year-olds Leah Heydman and Maddy Strauss standing on her front porch with a gift bag.
"What's this all for?" the 91-year-old asked. "What a surprise. This is wonderful. This will be fun going through. There's a little bit of everything, even food."
Leah and Maddy were part of a group of 26 Douglas High leadership and Key Club students helping to deliver 130 Christmas gift bags to homebound seniors.
"I feel this is a good cause going and helping them," Leah said. "It's nice having something to brighten their day."
Junior Jovita Montes, 16, has helped deliver gift bags her last two years in Key Club.
"It's really fun. It's a great experience to help out," she said. "I was wearing a Santa hat last year, and one lady called me Santa Claus."
Leadership student Dusty Fisher, 18, didn't have much luck delivering his first two bags. The recipients were not at home.
"I'm doing this to try and give extra help out in the community," he said. "It's pretty cool because they have no idea what they are getting, and it shows how many people care about them."
Key Club advisor K.C. Brennan said that community service is what the club is all about.
"This is the fun part of it," she said, "to go out and help seniors get their Christmas bags."
For Rebeca Lopez, 16, Thursday was her first time delivering bags.
"I want to help the community. I like it," she said of helping the elderly. "I'm excited, and I think it will be fun."
Douglas Area Rural Transportation driver Ron Schnur, 79, drove the students around Gardnerville and Minden helping with the deliveries.
"I give these high school kids a lot of credit. They're great," he said. "I know most of the homebound because I delivered Meals on Wheels for six years. The seniors are very thankful, and can't talk enough about how important it is to them."
The Young At Heart Club sponsored the gift bags and delivered them to homebound seniors from Jacks Valley Road, to South Lake Tahoe, to Topaz Ranch Estates.
