Despite some lighting issues, opening weekend of "Waiting For Sunrise" went better than imagined.
The final weekend of the student play begins Friday in the Douglas High drama room.
"It went surprisingly well. I'm a nervous wreck when it comes to plays, but it went well," director and writer Hayleigh Green said. "There was a very positive response. Some people said it was the best play they've ever seen. They were surprised it was student-written. "
The play is a drama which takes place one hundred years in the future after a nuclear World War III.
"This play is way more than a teenage romance stuck in the future. It is the survival of two people from different sides of the track," Green said. "Akya is stuck in a society ruled by a horrible dictator completely caught in her nightmare with no way out, and Max lives a life of luxury compared to Akya. He and many others are building a revolution underground to overtake the dictator above ground. "
Although this was the 17-year-old's second time directing, it was a first seeing a play she had written play out on stage.
"It was surreal. I kept expecting any moment to wake up," she said. "When I was writing it, I saw it as a movie, and when I saw people acting it out, it was very real and awesome."
Drama instructor Amy Sando said she was impressed by Green and the cast.
"We got a lot of positive feedback. One audience member said that was a better love story than 'Twilight,'" Sando said. "I was impressed by the student actors' show of emotion. I was proud of them being able to do a drama and come across believable."
