Basketball: Coleville opens season with wins

The Coleville High School girls basketball team opened the 2012-2013 season with two weekend wins at the Antelope Valley Lions Club Basketball Tournament.

Daniela Sandoval and Miranda Sturdivant scored 10 points each to lead Coleville to a 44-33 Friday night victory over Big Pine.

Also scoring for Coleville were Aide Merito with eight points, Stephanie Sandoval with six points, O'Laire Herrera and Kendall Dixon-Calhoun with four points apiece, and Naomi Graves with two points.

Daniela Sandoval led Coleville with 14 rebounds with Nicole Smith adding 11 boards in a strong performance.

Daniela Sandoval powered the Lady Wolves to a 36-20 victory in Saturday's championship game with her second double-double of the season, leading Coleville with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Miranda Sturdivant, Stephanie Sandoval, and Aide Merito each scored six points in a balanced scoring effort. Aide Merito led Coleville with seven assists and Stephanie Sandoval was the team leader in steals with four.

Daniela Sandoval and Miranda Sturdivant were named to the All-Tournament with Sandoval being named Tournament MVP.

Coleville ends the weekend 2-0 and will compete in Virginia City's Comstock Classic this Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Falcons lost to Elliot Christian 51-26 on Saturday. Statistics were not available from the game.

The Falcons opened up the year with losses to Whittell, Freedom Christian and Golden Sierra last week.
