Scammer attempts to get Social Security info, money

An Indian Hills woman reported Tuesday that a telephone caller attempted to get her Social Security number, and told her she would be arrested if she didn't pay $5,456 he claimed she had borrowed.

The woman, who did not give out any personal information, told deputies she was called two weeks ago from a telephone number registered to "Cash Now USA in Advance." The caller told her she owed $586. The woman said she never borrowed any money and hung up.

On Nov. 23, she said, the same company called from a different number, and said she owed $5,456, and would be arrested if she didn't pay.

The man, who had a Middle Eastern accent, hung up after the woman refused to disclose her Social Security number.

She contacted her attorney who advised her not to pay.

Deputies attempted to call the number, which went straight to an answering machine. The officer asked the company to contact him by telephone.
