Judges sought for annual holiday lights contest

Thanksgiving is over and it is time to plan our annual Christmas lights contest. The contest began in 2006 and every year the decorations have become more and more impressive. Last year's winner was Jim and Chris Beard at 1994 Mule Lane which Gail described as a "magical wonderland of Christmas lights". Each year the winner is presented with a plaque honoring their efforts and a picture of their decorated home appears in the paper.

The tradition has always been to have children from the neighborhood as our judges. Anyone under 15 can judge, they just need someone to drive them around the neighborhood several nights before the end of the contest as the neighborhood is very big and not everyone leaves their lights on every night.

The Beard's will not be eligible to win this year due to the rule that winners can't be named two years in a row. Other homes that have won or are particularly memorable include the antique wagon at 700 Pinto Circle; the lights set to music at 997 Farrier Court; 189 Arabian Lane; 1988 Palomino Lane; 1898 Wiseman Lane; 1994 Mule Lane; 769 Pinto Circle; and 1977 Lacey Court.

The contest winner will need to be selected by Dec.11 to allow for notification to the winner and for pictures to be taken. If you know any child who would like to be a judge this year, please have them contact me at the email address below or by phone at 775-790-0072.

I love the holiday decorations and can't wait to dig ours out. I think the porch is going to look magical with the icicle lights and the tree shining in the window - though we do call it a Channukah bush. As the nights get longer and colder, the bright lights of the season warm my soul and make the season merry and bright.
