A cold wind blowing

EDITOR:After another successful marching band season, in which the band performed its 201st field show in 28 years, the cold winds of change are blowing. It was proudly announced that Douglas High School will be getting a “new look” where the freshmen will be moving into a “sleek, state-of-the-art campus.” Unfortunately, the performing arts were once again left out in the cold. There is no auditorium that is included in the new construction.Promises were made. Promises were broken. In 1991 a bond issue that had an auditorium (which would have cost a $100,000 homeowner $.50 a month) failed. Years later the Douglas commissioners promised they would construct an auditorium, community center, senior center in various stages. Once again, no auditorium is sight. I could see that the main gym is scheduled for an update; molded seats, telescopic bleachers. Did this include heated seats so as to warm the spectators when they come in from the cold for an athletic event? It must be nice to have an update on a facility which is already in place. Obviously with the cuts to the music staff and no auditorium in the future, the performing art students of this community are second-class citizens. I would like to invite you all to the annual holiday concert on 7 p.m. Dec. 13. The admission is free (we will be taking donations at the door). The performance will be in the DHS commons where I can guarantee that you will hear outstanding sounding groups. However, I cannot guarantee that you will have a good seat or that you will be able to hear them properly. It appears as though the only purpose for the band and Madrigals is to perform at sporting events. Music education is secondary, if even that. Retired music educator Jackie Maye was quoted as saying, “Douglas County is a cultural void.” For years I attempted to prove that she was wrong. I guess I have failed, along with the administration, school trustees, and county commissioners.Bill ZabelskyDouglas High School Band & Choir Director
