Grant supports arts in Valley schools

Jazz musicians Connye Florance and Kevin Madill, who performed Nov. 9 at the CVIC Hall in Minden, also visited Sarah Holland and her "Tiger Choir" that afternoon at Carson Valley Middle School.

The program they presented to the students was about song writing and the relationship between words and music.

Jazz vocalist Florance and Jazz pianist Madill gave the students short poems by Langston Hughs, an African American poet of the Harlem Renassaince of the 1920s.

The musicians challenged the kids to, "find the music in the poetry." One group of students came up with their own lyrics which Florance …
