Edgewood Companies announces scholarships

Edgewood Companies, parent company of Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course & Restaurant, is helping send three area high school students off to college with $1,000 scholarships each. Family owned since its inception in 1872, Edgewood Companies selected three top students from a pool of more than 100 applicants.“Edgewood takes its role in the community very seriously, and we feel that these scholarships are a very direct way of reinvesting in our community,” Jan Garcia, human resources manager for Edgewood Companies, said. “It’s our way of thanking our neighbors for their decades of support and of giving back to the families that make the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe our home.”The recipients of this year’s scholarships are the following:Megan Mize, 18, of Stateline. Mize is attending the University of Nevada, Reno, where she will study occupational therapy or early childhood education. She is a 2012 graduate of George Whittell High School where she was involved in NHS, Key Club, student council, school newspaper, was the yearbook editor, played varsity and club volleyball, and volunteered with Relay for Life, Food Pantry and other places, while maintaining about a 4.2 grade point average. Mize will also play volleyball for UNR. Jason Reum, 18, of South Lake Tahoe. Reum is a 2012 graduate of South Tahoe High School, ranking eighth in his graduating class. He is attending the University of California, Los Angeles, with an undeclared major. Reum has been involved with the National Honor Society, mixed martial arts, dancing, acting, and Glee Club and has volunteered throughout the community as an AVID peer tutor, teaching dance, doing snow removal, and organizing blood drives at the high school. He played varsity soccer, where he was team captain. He was director of student affairs at SHS, and received the South Tahoe All State Academic Award.Taryn Morningstar, 18, of Minden. Morningstar graduated eighth in her class at Douglas High School, where she received the President’s Volunteer Service Award and took third in the American Mathematics Contest. She plans to study molecular biology or another biological science at University of California, Davis. Morningstar has been involved in NHS, Environmental Club, academic team, Chemistry Club, Block D Letterman’s Club, recreation softball, and horseback riding. She was president of Amnesty International Club and secretary of Alpine Club. Morningstar was on the varsity cross country team, and made the all-state academic team for cross country. She worked as a ranch hand, and performed community service for Kids & Horses as a side-walker and horse handler for special needs children. “Their families should be very proud of them, and we are very proud to contribute to their ongoing education. These are three remarkable young adults who have worked hard in their educational and personal lives,” Garcia said.

The design committee of Main Street Gardnerville is encouraging all businesses and homeowners along Main Street and adjacent side streets to brighten this holiday season by decorating with lights.“We encourage you to decorate your establishments by Nov. 28 to coincide with the Town of Gardnerville’s annual Carson Valley Christmas Kickoff when we light the Christmas tree and pavilion in Heritage Park,” said a committee spokesperson. “And this year, something new has been added... a fireworks display.”Committee members would like to turn downtown Gardnerville into “a holiday wonderland.”“This will encourage people to shop locally and enjoy our beautiful town,” they said. “We’re asking everyone to participate and join us in this effort to light up the season.”A volunteer with professional training in decorating and displays is available for consultation, free of charge, for Main Street businesses.For more information, call Paula Lochridge at 782-8027.n Those interested in having items appear in the business log should email press releases to reporter Scott Neuffer at
