Our Minden Rotary Club recently had the honor of supporting important programs at each of the two middle schools in the Valley. Both programs are designed to help students through this important and difficult period in their lives.
At Carson Valley Middle School, the Make a Difference Program run through the counseling office involves students in teaching and rewarding appropriate acts of respect and consideration toward others, and this is coordinated with related reading and discussion included as part of the literacy curriculum.
At Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School, the staff has implemented the Connections program, which identifies appropriate students to participate in a retreat designed to strengthen the relations between young people, teachers and staff. After the retreat, in which adults and young people face challenges together, mentors follow up during the rest of the year to be sure that the students continue to grow from the experience. Students who participated in eighth grade can then become counselors as ninth-graders.
We think these schools and specifically Principal Robert Been at Carson Valley Middle School and Principal Keith Lewis at Pau-Wa-Lu deserve our special thanks for the work they are doing on behalf of our young people and for giving our Rotary Club the opportunity to be a part of what they do.
