Roping Club hopes to lasso some cash

It takes money to practice team roping twice a week and host competitions every month, which is why the Carson Valley Roping Club is hosting a barbecue and dance Saturday at the fairgrounds in Gardnerville.

Bar opens at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Music is being provided by Mixed Company.

"We are a local organization that has been around for 20-plus years," club secretary Abby Curry said. "It's a good place for families to get together and socialize, and practice team roping which we all love to do."

The Carson Valley Roping Club was established in 1986 by a group of local team ropers, and is sanctioned by the American Cowboys Team Roping Association. The club meets at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

"Several of the adult members have been roping at the club since they were children, including myself," Curry said. "It is very much a family affair."

During the fundraiser, the club will also present its annual awards to members who have earned the most points during the year.

There will be silent and live auctions featuring items such as equine chiropractic adjustments, Tahoe Ridge wine, sunglasses, and gift certificates from Genoa Station and Eastern Sierra Feed.

The Carson Valley Roping Club is open to anyone of all ages and skill levels.

"We had a man who joined two years ago who never held a rope in his hand. It's a really good, supportive environment," Curry said. "If people want to get their kids involved, it's never too early. Our oldest member is 87, so there's a wide variety in age."

Tickets to the fundraiser are $20 at the door, or $15 in advance at Laxague Feed and Supply, and Ruby Rose Cowgirl Clothes.
