South county residents invited to wildfire protection session

An open session on protecting homes from wildfire will be 7 p.m. today in Topaz Ranch Estates.Sponsored by the East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the session will discuss defensible space, fireproofing homes, cutting pions, controlling pine beetles and wildfire safety and communication in southern Douglas County.Topaz Ranch Estates was the scene of the most destructive of this season’s wildfires back in May, claiming two homes and numerous vehicles after a controlled burn was improperly extinguished.
