Veryl passed away at the age of 86 in Carson City.
He was born in St. Francis, Kan., the youngest of four children born to Swedish immigrant, John Bergstrom, and Ethel Hewitt-Bergstrom of S.D. John passed away at the age of 53 when Veryl was just 8 years old. Ethel and the kids moved to Rio Vista, Calif. in 1939, where he finished school, enlisted in the Army and was deployed to Nagasaki, Japan in 1945, being among the first troops to arrive after the bomb. Upon his return to Rio Vista, Veryl married his high school sweetheart, Betty Barr, on February 9, 1947. They had two children, John and Cheryl. The family moved to Carson in 1965, where Veryl managed Copeland Lumber for over 20 years. In 1974 he married Zelda Lealtad, and they lived in Genoa and Gardnerville.
Veryl was an avid team roper and was a charter member of the Carson Valley Roping Club. He was also a member of Kiwanis in Carson City.
Veryl was preceded in death by Betty and Zelda; his brother, Art Bergstrom; and sister, Sophia Martin. Surviving are son, John (Beverley) of Greenbrier, Ark.; daughter Cheryl Burns (Scott) of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; brother, Roy Bergstrom (Fay) of Courtland, Calif.; grandchildren, Cory Bergstrom (Jamie) of Bryant, Ark., Brandy Cooney (Loren) of Lovelock, Nev., Natalie King (Jade) of Grenada, West Indies, Brian Burns of Seattle, Wash., John Burns of Pullman, Wash., Christina Burns of Missoula, Mont., and David McCarroll (Christine) of Lodi, Calif. He had three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his best and closest friend, Roxanne Pedley.
There will be no funeral or memorial service.
