Much has been said about Walmart coming to our Valley, and I am in total support of this new business. When the Jacobsen ranch was sold and obtained commercial zoning everyone was in support until Walmart decided to build and then folks said "that's not the kind of commercial we wanted" and when we all said that we needed more jobs and Walmart will be hiring then folks said "that's not the kind of jobs we wanted." Now that the highway has been changed to accommodate the commercial zoning everyone is blaming Walmart when they should be asking the planners and designers "what were you thinking?"
No matter what commercial went in that property the road still would have been changed. If Macy's or any other "upscale" retailer had come in no one would have complained even when their starting pay is the same. I was embarrassed to see our chamber of commerce, whose job is to welcome and support business, hold a forum on how to compete with Walmart. When I buy tires I go to Mark Smith because I like the service and product and people who went to Walmart in the north county will still go to Walmart and I will still go to Mark Smith. When I wanted a bicycle I went to Big Daddy's because I like the service and product and people who went to Walmart in the north county will still go there and I will still go to Big Daddy's.
Douglas County is in need of sales tax dollars and all those communities to our south will be contributing to that need and using less fuel as well. If you don't like Walmart then don't shop there but I'll be glad to support another "local" business. By the way, does anyone know where you can buy a pair of men's work jeans in Gardnerville or Minden? Nowhere today but soon the answer will be Walmart.
