Racing: Slick Racing wins Lucas Oil event in San Diego

Slick Racing, a Douglas County based drag boat race team, competed and won the Pro Eliminator Class recently in the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series’ national event, the Bayfair Fall Classic in Mission Bay, San Diego, California. Paul “Slick” and Nancy Fontenot, owners of Slick Racing, after attending last month’s race in Marble Falls, Texas, where they gained another round to hold their points lead, takes a commanding lead after winning San Diego. Before the San Diego race, the team had less than a 2-round points lead going into San Diego and now, has more than a 4-round points lead going into the World Finals in Phoenix, Ariz., Nov. 1-4, 2012 (which will be a 5 round race). The boat, “I’m Back~Hot-n-Bothered” No. 669, is a blown alcohol pickle fork hydro and competes in the 8.000 second 1/4 mile Pro Eliminator class and qualified in last place at the race because of parts problems. On Friday, during Test & Tune, the team blew up a whirl-away (part of the V-drive) and then on Saturday, during Qualifying, broke the prop shaft and the prop went to the bottom of Mission Bay (which the Rescue Team found on Sunday morning). On Sunday, first round — racing the No. 1 qualifier, the team won with a 8.09 pass; second round — racing the No. 2 points chaser, the team took the win to start moving even further in the points. In the finals, Slick drove the boat to a perfect pass of 8.000 to win the Pro Eliminator Class. Slick Racing, with its quest this year for the Pro Eliminator World Championship, will attend the World Finals with its sponsors: Percival Construction – Stateline; Carson Valley Carquest – Gardnerville; Carson Valley Welding – Carson City; Carson Valley Transmission – Gardnerville; New Pioneer Plumbing – Minden; and A Sign Shop – Gardnerville and crew: Jim Burkett; Frank Robinson; Bill Abbott and Jerry Keller.
