With the odor of sauerkraut and sounds of oompa music wafting through the air in Gardnerville, Carson Valley Sertoma's annual Oktoberfest is under way.
Starting at noon, the event will continue through 4 p.m. and attract as many as 500 people.
Oktoberfest 2012 will feature the Gruber Family Band, a family that grew up together with the German polka, whom Sertoma have used at Oktoberfest for years.
To eat, there is plain and spicy German bratwurst from the Sausage Factory, handmade sauerkraut, German potato salad, pretzels and mustard and apple strudel.
The food is largely provided by local Dutch resident Garry Den Heyer, who was instrumental in the opening of the Carson Valley Swim Center.
A variety of specialty beers will be available including Oktoberfest brews. The music and dancing starts at noon and continues until 4:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.
The Carson Valley Community Food Closet, family support council and China Spring are a few of the many community programs that Sertoma supports.
Sertoma also gives out at least five scholarships each year to Douglas High graduates.
