While Nevada's unemployment ticked up in the month of August, the unemployment rate in Douglas County fell by 0.6 of a percent.
According to figures released Friday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, Douglas County's rate decreased from 12.7 percent in July to 12.1 percent in August. The percentage represents the lowest unemployment rate in the county for 2012.
The total labor force in the county, however, dipped between the two months, from 22,310 in July to 22,060 in August. Total employment fell from 19,480 workers to 19,380 workers, while total unemployment dropped from 2,830 workers to 2,680 workers.
In other words, erosion in the workforce drove the unemployment rate down in August rather than employment gains.
Statewide, the unemployment rate crept up from 12 percent in July to 12.1 percent in August, both numbers seasonally adjusted.
