My name is Harlee Quinn Winking. I am a border collie. Last year at this time I was at the Douglas County Animal Shelter. I was skinny and scared and wondering if I was ever going to have a family again.
The Douglas County Animal Shelter does a great job, and it is assisted-if you don't already know-by the local volunteer 501c3 charity group Douglas Animal Welfare Group. The group gets help for shelter dogs and cats in many ways: medical/dental care, grooming, training, fostering, adoptions, etc. DAWG is having a fundraising event. I understand it takes more than just love to provide us animals what we need.
I was adopted by group members Larry and Laura Winking, and now I have the best life. I will even be walking in the 2012 DAWG Mutt Poker Walk fundraiser 10 a.m. Oct. 6 at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center. All the money raised will help all the other dogs and cats at the shelter have the same opportunity I got.
Please come out with your best friend and your family to join me in the leisurely two-mile walk through Gardnerville. Besides the walk and the poker game, where you can win up to $200 for the best poker hand (that's a lot of kibble), you can qualify to win fabulous vacation getaways by raising sponsorship money for you and your dog. Your dog can win a free photo/video shoot and be the "face" of the next poker walk. Just think your dog could be famous.
There will be door prizes for participants, raffle items that include gifts from Starbucks and Sorensen's Resort, dinner packages at local restaurants like Saletti's, and many, many more.
Cafe Girasole will be offering a great lunch menu while you watch an agility and rally demonstration put on by Carson Canine Adventure, and enjoy music provided by DJ Dona Baxter. You can shop 'til you drop at over 15 vendors that will be there from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. including local sketch artist Reena Spansail. There will also be a microchip and vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to noon, that is open to the public.
Can't make it? You can still help. Just go to www.dawgrescue.com and sponsor one or more of the shelter dogs that volunteers have registered for the walk like Bukowski, Dobby, and Cinnamon! And if you donate $100 or more (tax deductible, of course), you'll be eligible for fantastic prize drawings. It's definitely a win-win opportunity!
There is a reason we dogs and cats don't have pockets - we don't have money, credit cards or cell phones. That's why we can all use a little help from you.
Woof, Woof (that's thank you in dog). See you then.
