In Douglas County, 300 students in 11 schools receive a backpack of weekend supplemental food each Friday.
To keep the shelves stocked the Douglas County Backpack Buddies Consortium is having a fundraiser 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Walgreens parking lot on Waterloo Lane.
"It's an opportunity to help some of the most needy people in our community," Chairwoman Lin Larson said.
The fundraiser includes a bounce house, bake sale, rummage sale and barbecue. Food donations are also being accepted.
The program cost $5 a week and provides enough food for seven meals.
Each backpack includes tuna fish, two dinner items such as spaghettios or chili, two soups, vegetable, fruit, macaroni and cheese, two breakfast items, six snacks and a drink.
Volunteers meet the second Monday of the month to pack the 1,200 backpacks, and volunteers are always needed.
To volunteer, call Julie Coleman at 267-5916.
Monetary donations are also accepted, and are tax deductible.
Checks can be made payable to Minden Rotary Club Foundation, c/o Lin Larson, 1295 Bridle Way, Minden, NV, 89423. Include Backpack Buddies in the memo line.
