The Douglas girls' soccer team has been showing steady improvement with every game this season.
Tuesday marked a breakout match of sorts as Douglas avenged an early season 3-1 loss to Bishop Manogue with an impressive 4-1 victory over the Miners in Minden.
The win boosted Douglas' overall record on the season to 8-2 and the Tigers improved to 5-1 in Northern Division I play. Douglas also extended its home unbeaten streak to 17 matches and its home win streak to 15 dating back to 2010.
"The whole team rallied together, they really wanted the win and took care of the details that made it happen," Douglas coach Lorraine Fitzhugh said. "So many smiles and proud
expressions once the hard work was done. Every player went above and beyond."
Douglas had lost three of its last four matches against Manogue coming in, but wasted little time getting on the board Tuesday as Emily Lawrence scored on an assist from Caitlin Jones in the third minute.
Manogue answered on a bouncing shot to the far post just two minutes later, but Douglas took the lead for good in the 23rd minute on an unassisted goal from Allissa Holley, her eighth of the season.
Douglas went up 3-1 late in the first half when sophomore Lindsey Adams found McKenna Kynett for a goal, her sixth of the year.
The Douglas defensive line of Megan Sheets, Kassidy Freitas and Hannah Coverley minimized the Miner shots on net through the remainder of the half and sophomore keeper Corryne Millet made a number of nice saves, including a leaping one off her fingertips from 30 yards out.
She finished the game with nine saves.
Douglas added the game's final goal in the 60th minute when Lindsey Adams scored off an assist from Kynett.
Fitzhugh said a good portion of the team has been battling the flu this week. She specifically noted center midfielder Camry Varble and her play during the match.
"She really dug deep," Fitzhugh said. "She played excellent and really should have been home in bed."
Douglas also got strong efforts out of Lexie Weaver and Caitlyn Bidart in the match.
Douglas next travels to Damonte Ranch Friday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
