Man gets suspended 90-day jail sentence in DUI

A South Lake Tahoe man admitted driving under the influence with two young children in his vehicle.

Raymond Frank Carpenter, 31, pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence and received a 90-day jail sentence suspended for two years.

Carpenter was arrested Sept. 7 after a witness reported he was speeding down Highway 395 and failed to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

He was pulled over on Gilman Avenue where he failed a field sobriety test.

His blood alcohol content was .17. The children, aged 2 and 7, were in the back seat. Carpenter's wife was also intoxicated, deputies said.

Defense attorney Tod Young told Justice of the Peace Tom Perkins that the children were with their grandparents until the parents were further along in their sobriety.

"I know that was a little more than you bargained for, but I think you know why," East Fork Justice of the Peace Tom Perkins said.

Carpenter was ordered to pay a fine of $897. A charge of child endangerment was dropped.
