Man admits hitting brother with handle

A Bodie Flats man admitted Tuesday to beating his brother with a hatchet handle during an Aug. 15 altercation.

Don Beckerdite, 56, pleaded guilty to one count of battery with a deadly weapon in Douglas County District Court on Tuesday.

"I hit my brother with an ax handle," Beckerdite said of the Aug. 15 incident at the mobile home the two men shared.

Beckerdite faces up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine at his sentencing scheduled for Nov. 13.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Beckerdite's brother told deputies he heard a crash in his bedroom and when he went to investigate he was attacked.

The victim had serious injuries to his head and hands, deputies reported.

According to the sheriff's report, Beckerdite told deputies he was angry at his brother, so he broke the sliding glass door and hit his brother with the handle.

Beckerdite is being held in Douglas County Jail. Gamble ordered that a hearing be held before he's released.
