Jas. Stuard of Markleeville has taken up 240 acres of land between Woodfords and Fredricksburg, and intends cultivating and making it into a fine ranch. He proposes to tunnel into the hill for water and to bring a ditch from the river above Woodfords. Mr. Stuard will build a house and expects to move his family there this fall.

Last evening hundreds of Douglas County people gathered at the Minden depot to bid farewell to Clarence Anderson and Edward Granata, the first two of our young men to answer the call to arms under the selective draft.

When the Douglas County High School opened Tuesday morning the enrollment totaled 108, which is identical with the average attendance of last term. Included in the enrollment are four students taking post graduate work. Several students are yet to register and when the enrollment is complete it is believed that the attendance will be even greater than that of last term.

The first sign that development may at last be beginning on the large landholdings in the Lake Tahoe area of Douglas County came last week at the Wednesday evening meeting of the county planning commission. A preliminary sketch of a master development plan for the Round Hill property of A. K. Bourne was presented to the commission by M. J. Strang, Reno designer and land planning consultant.

Unique aircraft and interesting pilots will be competing Sept. 17-20 at the National Championship Air Races in Reno. Among the entries are several firsts to this aviation event: first time warbird aircraft and a woman pilot in every class. Reno features four classes of pylon races - the only event in the world that offers a full racing venue.

If and when a person suspected of starting the Gondola fire is placed into custody, the person could face up to five years in prison and a maximum $250,000 in fines, said Patty Pontello, spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office.
