120 years ago

August 26, 1892

Geo Venable, who has been hauling freight from the Carson to Alpine county, has been engaged to haul the machinery for the Smith Valley creamery. He will have a four horse team haul Alpine freight during the time he is occupied with the machinery job.

95 years ago

August 24, 1917

To meet any possible coal shortage in the West next winter more extensive use of fuel wood from the National Forests is urged by the government's foresters, who are advertising both ranchers and town dwellers to be forehanded in making arrangements for the supply of their fuel needs.

80 years ago

August 26,1932

The flow of the East Fork of the Carson River has dropped for the past week, Peter Krummes, water commissioner reported yesterday. Natural flow of the river yesterday totaled 70 second feet and is augmented by 30 second feet of storage water from the Alpine Land and Reservoir company's storage system. For some time 40 second feet of water was drawn from the reservoirs but this was cut down during the week.

August 23, 1962

Two potentially dangerous fires in the past week- one of them covering 75 acres and bringing firefighters from as far away as Reno - have pointed up the extreme conditions existing on the east slopes of the Sierra. Fuel moisture is at its lowest point in years; persisted winds have added to the hazard by causing rapid spread by any fire -whether caused by man or lightning.

August 27, 1987

For the third time in little more than a year, the state's largest improvement district this week picked a new manager. Bob Spellberg, clerk-treasurer for Ely, will man the top post for the Gardnerville Ranchos General Improvement District starting Oct.1. The district has lost three mangers, for various reasons, since last August.

August 21, 2002

Longtime Carson Valley Rancher Herman Herbig died Monday at Carson-Tahoe Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 81. Herbig and his wife, Anneliese, were honored in June for donating more than 26 acres of land for the new Herbig park, home to the Carson Valley Skate Facility, across from Lampe park and future sight of a complete sporting and recreational facility.
