120 years ago

August 19,1892

W.S. Johnson, Jim VanSickle and others saw a she bear and two cubs on Kingsbury grade this week and Wednesday morning a party of hunters went forth to capture the bear. The party consisted of Dr. Young W.S. Johnson, Dave Delong and Water Frey. The hunters returned minus the bear, but report the trail was so steep they could not follow the tracks.

August 17, 1917

The fire siren purchased by the Gardnerville fire department was installed on the top of Odd Fellow's hall this week and Wednesday morning was given a partial try-out.

80 years ago

August 19, 1932

Dan Allen of Hawthorne was committed to the state mental hospital Monday when he was found to be suffering from melancholia dementia. The hearing was held before County Clerk D.M. Buckingham. Doctors D A. Smith and J. W. Davis acted on the examining board. Allen came to Hawthorne three years ago and for a long time operated a barber shop there. Prior to that he operated a shop in Tonopah, where he resided many years.

August 16, 1962

New president of the Carson valley Chamber of Commerce is Wilfred D. (Buck) Jones, Gardnerville realtor and insurance agent. Other officers elected for the coming year include Keith Cornforth, vice president; Warren Reed, secretary and Herd Horch, treasurer. The elections were held Tuesday at a meeting of the Chamber Board Directory.

August 20, 1987

Hot, dry, dusty weather, plus a high incidence of flies, have all contributed to a large infestation of pinkeye in Carson Valley. Some cattle producers in the Valley are reporting infestations as high as 35-40 percent. The Livestock Conservation Institute estimates that pinkeye costs U.S. producers about $150 million in losses.

The new special investigator for the Douglas County District Attorney relocated from Southern California to better enjoy a couple of his favorite things: law enforcement and horses. Steven Schultz, 37, started as special investigator for the district attorney Monday. He is a former detective with the Culver City (Calif.) Police Department.
