After three successful years of hosting the Run Ed Run 5K/10K fundraiser, the Douglas County Education Foundation added a new wrinkle for this year.
In addition to the 5K and 10K runs, which start and end at Douglas High School, the foundation will host a half marathon (13.1 miles) this year.
This year's event will be Oct. 7, with the half marathon starting at 8 a.m. and the 5K and 10K runs starting at 9 a.m.
"We've had good reception in the community over our first three years," said event organizer Jill Alley. "We wanted to add something new and thought this would be a fun option for some people."
It is the only half marathon currently available in Carson Valley.
Last year's run drew nearly 500 participants.
The 5K will go to the edge of Park Cattle Ranch, up Muller Lane and back to Douglas High School.
The half marathon will go up Muller Lane to Foothill and down Genoa Lane. Park Cattle agreed to let runners use its road from Genoa Lane back to Muller so there will be no highway running.
Alley said all of the proceeds from the event go toward supporting Douglas County school.
"We give about $20,000 in grants every year to teachers and counselors," Alley said. "The goal is to fund things that will help a large number of students over a period of many years.
"We work closely with the district office to make sure we can fill niches, and not duplicate areas that are already covered by the budget. It's things like pottery kilns for the ceramics class, reading programs and physical education equipment."
Trophies for Run Ed Run are made by students in the welding program. Alley said David Walley's donated a pair of $50 gift certificates for the winners of the half marathon.
All participants will receive passes to the Walley's hot tubs.
"Careflight comes in with a helicopter and we have some fire trucks out there," Alley said. "The Army brings in this huge rock wall for climbing. There are some bounce houses. It's a fun day for the family.
"We'll be doing a school competition, and we're still working out the details on it, but we'll be giving $1,000 the school with the most spirit."
Cost for Run Ed Run is $25 for the 5K or 10K ($10 for 19 and under), $5 for the kid's run and $45 for the half-marathon.
Alley said registration forms will also be available at CV Sports on Topsy Lane and at the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department.
Registration closes on Oct. 5.
