Firefighters responding to lightning caused blazes

East Fork and Bureau of Land Management firefighters are responding to three blazes set by lightning strikes in the Pine Nut Mountains east of Gardnerville.

Two of the fires started around 2:02 p.m. in the area of Buckeye Canyon in an old burn.

A third fire was reported above Sierra Spirit Ranch near Mount Siegel.

Smoke plumes are reported rising above the blazes, according to firefighters on scene.

National Weather Service radar shows a storm cell traveling north along the Pine Nuts through eastern Douglas County. The cell is continuing north into Carson City and Lyon County.

The Weather Service has issued a special statement that showers are developing through 4 p.m. along the Carson Range in the Sierra. If they occur, they could also bring lightning strikes and gusty winds.

A red flag warning for thunderstorms is in effect through 5 a.m. Monday.

East Fork has asked all volunteers to man their stations, and initiated their lightning plan.
