Curse of the Hanging Tree canceled

Thank you, Carson Valley; the barn tour was a huge success. Thanks to all who attended and all who participated. Thanks to the barn owners for you and your barns are the stars of the show.

If you are asking what's next now that it's almost July, we have some great news for you - and some not so good news. First, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Curse of the Hanging Tree has been canceled for this year. We know that this event is a huge crowd pleaser, so if you want to see it return next year, call 782-2555 and tell Cindy or Grace how you will help. We need help with the production as well as help with the event itself.

What we do have planned for you in July starts with our continuing lecture series. On July 12, at 7 p.m. Jim Bonar will speak on "The Fremont Cannon, Where is it?" Jim will try to answer a few questions, including: Is the Nevada cannon the same cannon John Fremont dragged across the country in 1844 and what happened to the cannon after Fremont left it in the Sierra that cold January? Hear the tale of the possible answers to these questions and how it affects our lives and beliefs today. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and admission is free to DCHS members, $3 for nonmembers.

Our next Flea Market is July 21 in the parking lot of the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center. A 10-foot x10-foot space is $20 reserved in advance. We usually have a big turnout, so get your spaces early. You must be set up by 8 a.m. and we close down at 2 p.m. Applications are available at the front desk of the museum or on our web site, Walk-ins the day of the event will be charged $30 for a space. August will feature more great events, including another in our lecture series on Aug. 9, and another flea market on Aug. 18. Of course, the main event for the month is the Taste of the Towns on Saturday evening, Aug. 4. Tickets for this summer standard are $25 per person, $20 for DCHS members. If you live here, visit here or just eat here, this event is a must for you.

On Aug. 12 from 1 to 3 p.m., we will conduct another of our quests for your knowledge in identifying our historic photo collection. We have a lot of photos and we are hoping you can come to the Gardnerville Museum and identify who is in them. We'll have more information about the event in future columns, but keep the date open. We need your input.

Aug. 21, from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. we will be taking part in another "Dining for Dollars." This time head up to Chili's in the Topsy Lane shopping center to participate. More about all these events as August nears.

All monies donated to DCHS are 100 percent tax deductible and go to keep our doors open. The Douglas County Historical Society receives only occasional financial assistance from our county and state governments. We are here solely to preserve the history of this wonderful Valley and to make sure you have the opportunity to enjoy it.
