Softball: Hot Shots stay strong at Reno tourney

The Carson Valley 12U and 10U softball teams won first place in their respective silver division championships at the Fast Pitch Freaks "A" tournament in Reno, June 16-17.

The 12U team posted come behind wins against the Sparks Storm (8-7) and the Elk Grove, Calif. Thunder (12-8) to nab the championship.

"This tournament was a huge step for our entire Hot Shots program," said 12U Coach Eddie Doughty. "It proves that this organization can compete with any team in the area. The girls were confident in their ability and never lost faith in each other."

The 12U team was down to their last out and down by three against the Storm, before rallying four runs in the last at bat to win the game and advance to the championship.

In the championship, the Hot Shots trailed by four runs in the seventh before tying the score and forcing the game into extra innings. They scored five runs in the eighth inning to win.

The 10U Hot Shots brought the same intensity to earn their silver division win, beating out California's Lady Cyclones 11-2 in the championship ride.

"We faced some solid competition this weekend, and we learned a lot about ourselves, our strengths and our opportunities," said 10U Coach Joey McNinch.

"We continue to be solid with pitching, and when our defense backs them up, we are tough to beat."

Pitchers Janae Blue Horse and Alyssa Smokey combined efforts to deliver six strikeouts and allow only two hits.

Offensively, the Hot Shots showed no mercy, tallying enough runs to end the game in four innings. Jasmine McNinch paced the Hot Shots at the plate. She went 2-2, with one RBI and two runs scored. Also leading the Hot Shots in the championship with hits were Madeline Boyer (1-1) and Alexandria Salciedo (1-1, 2 RBIs). Joie Maki and Blue Horse each had three plate appearances (ROE 1, BB 2). Maki scored three runs and Blue Horse scored two. Maggie Usher reached on an error to grab an RBI for her team.

The Hot Shots now travel to Susanville, Calif., for their sixth weekend of tournament action.
