Federal payment $20,000 less than county budgeted

A federal payment in lieu of taxes came up nearly $20,000 short of what was budgeted by Douglas County for this fiscal year.Sen. Harry Reid's office announced last week that $632,761 were distributed on June 14. County Manager Steve Mokrohisky said the county budgeted $652,532 from the program.The money is paid by the federal government to counties based on the amount of public land held in trust, because that land can't be taxed.Reid said that the regular payments are a result of legislation passed in 2008 to ensure the program is fully funded every year through 2012."PILT payments make a …
